Tiempo de Silencio wins madrid forest competition

27 January 2021

In the coming years, the city of Madrid will create a 74km-long forest belt around the city’s perimeters, Bosque Metropolitano Madrid. Planting hundreds of thousands of new trees helps to improve the Spanish capital’s poor air quality. A huge “environmental belt” existing of trees, new parks, leisure areas and even green bridges over some of the city’s main motorways.

The winning plan for the north-west crown is called ‘Tiempo de Silencio’. Our team developed a forestation strategy that guarantees a valuable result at every stage, and used parametric design to realize many desired qualities and work with local conditions. The needs of citizens, the potential of local ecology, the economic potential and the challenges of drought, heat, and pollution all define the future’s forest.

The Metropolitan Forest Madrid acts as a thermal regulator for the city by addressing the ‘urban heat island’ effect. Our new system will bring more green spaces to parts of Madrid where there’s currently a scarcity, connecting the city through a green ring that will run around it.
