Landscape Works with Piet Oudolf and LOLA: In Search of Sharawadgi. This exhibition at SCHUNCK in Heerlen shows work by LOLA Landscape Architects and Piet Oudolf. On the basis of enlargements of original drawings, models, (film) images, and new installations, the exhibition shows a previously unseen perspective on garden design, landscape architecture, public space, nature development and climate change. In response to the work of Oudolf and LOLA Landscape Architects, new works created especially for the exhibition and existing works related to the themes are on display by the artists Joseph Beuys, Kie Ellens, Anne Geene, Giuseppe Licari, Geert Mul, Darcy Neven, Vijai Patchineelam & Adrijana Gvozdenovic and Sanne Vaassen.
The exhibition is a journey through various landscape works by Oudolf, LOLA and the guest artists. It’s organized around 5 themes, that highlight different important aspects of the (urban) landscape: composing nature, dreamy realism, everybody is a gardener, life lines, and nouveaux terroirs. It’s about aesthetics, big change, people, structure, and grounding. It is about the gardens, landscapes, and projects of Oudolf and LOLA separately, but above all about their close collaboration and corresponding vision on landscapes. Both work from a human perspective and strive for the development of public spaces that are meaningful for visitors and local residents. The desire for nature in our daily lives is a leading force behind their projects.
The exhibition shows projects like the High Line in New York, the Hauser & Wirth Gardens in Somerset, Forest Park Shenzhen, Star Maze in Tytsjerk, and the Leisure Lane in Parkstad. Next to that, there is a 50m long wallpaper of parametric forest, a literal carpet of one of Oudolf’s planting plans, a dried clay golf course, shelves full of archeological findings of Etzenrade, a composition of sheaves harvested from Piet Oudolf’s private garden, and many more works that collectively portray an image of multifaceted qualities and challenges of the contemporary landscape.
