Scientist Valley designed by LOLA and Mecanoo

3 May 2023

Out of 173 entries, the consortium of SZAD, LOLA Landscape Architects and Mecanoo won the international design competition for the Shenzhen Guangming Scientist Valley. Guangming Science City is to become the first comprehensive national science center in the Greater Bay Area. Researchers and innovative talents from around the world will flock to the city, making it a world-leading research and innovation hub.

The new center will serve as the core of an international science and technology innovation center in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. The project is located at the core of a large scientific cluster and covers approximately 1.2 square kilometers. It refers to the Lian Tang Reservoir, the Lou Village Reservoir and the valley space between them. The site has the ecological advantage of being settled between mountains and water.

Based on the unique nature of the site, the design team proposed a scientific forest. Valley of the Coexistence’s concept is based on the concept of time and the strategy of ‘temporal restoration and selective construction’. The plan includes a diverse public activity program, named ‘1001 Forest Gardens’. Additionally, there will also be three symbiotic components, namely a public loop, a research center and a natural perimeter layer. We hope that the public and scientists will work together to grow the forest.
