LOLA wins Haitang River Park

7 December 2023

After a competitive request for proposal process on an international scale, LOLA Landscape Architects won the competition for the design of the Haitang River Park in Sanya, China. The ambition is to turn The Haitang River, its surrounding dunes, and marshlands, into a natural landscape where urban, agricultural, and touristic functions blend in harmoniously.

The landscape design follows a simple set of rules, based on knowledge of ecology, water management and microclimate. They support the river to be a healthy living organism and they sculpt the area into a unique destination. The resiliency of the landscape increases through the restoration of natural biotopes such as mangroves, birds, and fishes.

The Haitang River project plays a central and crucial role in accomplishing this vision. Numerous natural destinations worldwide lost their distinctive qualities due to tourist over-exploitation. The aim is to strike the right balance between nature preservation and touristic development, harmonize ecology with economy, balance the slow and fast, blend exclusivity and accessibility. management, and microclimate. They support the river to be a healthy living organism and they sculpt the area into a unique destination.
