LOLA and Bureau Stadsnatuur join the TU Delft Campus development

3 September 2024

LOLA Landscape Architects has been selected as the designer of the outdoor space on the southern part of the TU Delft campus. TU Delft is one of the most progressive universities in the field of sustainability and their campus location is the spatial manifestation, where new buildings will contribute to an innovative way of sustainable building, with tech-driven solutions.

What does innovation and sustainability mean for the campus, where in a clinical university-setting it is easy to lose touch with nature? LOLA sees the future of sustainability as a combination between hi-tech development and reviving our nature and biodiversity. The development area is a 16ha big academic cluster on the Campus South of the TU Delft. It borders the Rotterdamseweg, Deltares, the Nuclear Reactor and the hockey fields of Hudito.

TU Delft Campus development
The area has been part of the TU Delft Campus since the 60s when the Faculty of Aerospace engineering was built and has since undergone multiple transitions. In the coming years it will be redeveloped with new laboratories, faculties and education buildings.

The landscape concept is an outdoor living room, a welcoming area with a quality of stay and programmed spots. We aim to create a campus environment where students can interact with each other, nature and enjoy being outdoors.

Our goal is to enrich the current landscape with layered planting to create diverse habitats for animals and people. The living environment should be designed in a way that it stays comfortable with climate change taken into account. This means that we have to provide enough water storage and shadow to prevent flooding and heat stress.

New green and lively campus
For the landscape design LOLA teamed up with Bureau Stadsnatuur to make sure we create the right habitats for local animals. We are working in close contact with the TU Delft and the connected architects. Our mutual goal for the Kluyvergebied is to design an inviting, green and lively campus. The expectation is that the construction of the first new buildings will commence in the beginning of next year.
