First part of the Slachthuiswijk public space is open!

11 April 2025

Great news from Antwerp! The first part of the Slachthuiswijk public space, the central part of the Vetten Osplein, has officially been opened. Local residents immediately embraced the play fountain on the intimate square of Lobroekplein which serves as the living room for the neighbourhood.

Together with Sweco Belgium, Posadmaxwan and Buiting Advies, LOLA Landscape Architects designed a green public space for the former slaughterhouse district of Antwerpen which will see its number of residents increase over the coming years. Through an extensive participatory process, we redeveloped the industrial and car-focused area into a green oasis with more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

With the green spaces in the neighborhood connecting to surrounding green areas it makes for a pleasant habitat for birds, butterflies and bees. And with the abundance of plants and trees it makes for pleasant living by reducing heat stress, wind and noise. Water also plays a big part in the design, with water being collected and reused in and around the neighborhood.
