LOLA Landscape Architects’ vision for the Hamburg Science City Bahrenfeld design competition seamlessly integrates science and nature. In partnership with MANDAWORKS, we crafted a proposal that strengthens the connection between the new district and its natural surroundings while establishing strong links to the surrounding areas. As one of Hamburg’s most ambitious projects, Science City Hamburg aims to become a central hub for scientific academia and housing.
Hamburg Bahrenfeld has it all: a rich history, a renowned university, and the impressive Volkspark, the city’s largest park. Acceleration is deeply embedded in Bahrenfeld’s identity. The Volkspark was an innovation in its time, acting as a catalyst for local recreation in Hamburg. HERA in the 1990s introduced further innovation to Bahrenfeld, and in 2019, Hamburg University was declared a University of Excellence.
In the past, innovation and acceleration occurred in separate areas. Our proposal connects these areas, creating a new acceleration point for Bahrenfeld. On the site of the former trotting track, science, community, and landscape converge to form a new urban identity. The university space allows room for growth, brings the Volkspark into the district, and creates new residential qualities and communal spaces for the neighborhood.
The focus of Science City Bahrenfeld is to develop a compact, mixed-use, and easily accessible district that connects with the surrounding neighborhoods. More meeting points and shared spaces foster innovation. The acceleration ranges from well-connected urban squares to intimate, green spaces. In short, Bahrenfeld is a vibrant district where the global meets the local, and the Volkspark is omnipresent.
The connection of Science City, the Bahrenfelder Nachbarschaft, and the garden city Holstenkamp through key open spaces along the “accelerator axis” enables a coexistence and overlap that makes the district a great place to live and work. The district’s connections are reinforced by a sequence of public spaces with a clear spatial hierarchy. Bahrenfeld’s development strives for seamless integration of Science City, transforming green corridors in the east and linking them to Hamburg’s broader green infrastructure.
Congratulations to Cobe on winning the competition, and to fellow finalists Karres en Brands + ADEPT.
